People talk about flushing like it's one thing. It's really two, and they happen for different reasons.

Mid-flower flushing is a fix, not a routine step — you reach for it when runoff TDS is climbing well past your input water and the plant's showing signs of nutrient burn or lockout. Flush with plain, pH-balanced water until the runoff TDS reading matches what's going into the pot. That's your signal the salt buildup is cleared and you can resume feeding at a lower strength.

Flushing before harvest is scheduled, not reactive — roughly one to two weeks out from harvest, plain water only, no nutrients. The goal here isn't correcting a problem, it's pulling the plant off nitrogen so it stops prioritizing chlorophyll production and puts everything into finishing the flowers instead. Either way, a TDS meter runoff reading is the only way to know you're actually done and not just guessing based on how many gallons you've poured through the pot.

Where Growers Usually Trip Up

Not a list of Q&As — just the patterns we see most often when people write in with flowering problems:

Training too late is the single most common one. By the time stems are visibly rigid, bending them isn't "training" anymore, it's just risking a break — and a broken cola near harvest is a lot more costly than a slightly uneven canopy.

Second most common: pruning hard, then pruning hard again a few days later because the plant "still looks messy." It doesn't need more cuts, it needs the two weeks you skipped the first time.

Third: adjusting pH by adding more nutrients, which almost always makes it worse. If runoff pH is off, the fix is usually plain pH-adjusted water first, then a lighter feed — not a bigger dose of whatever you were already using.

And the flushing mistake that costs people the most: skipping the pre-harvest flush entirely because "the plant looks fine." You won't see the difference in the plant — you'll taste it. A rushed or skipped flush is one of the more common reasons a homegrown harvest smells great but smokes harsh.
